HOW TO

1. Prepare the surface that is to be painted as needed; sand it down to a dull finish and wash down with a product such as TSP. Larger damage should be fixed but small bumps and scratches can be left.

2. The molding can be glued to the surface if you want raised “panels” on the faux-metal. Glue the button plugs onto the molding. Let the glue dry and then reinforce the glue by adding a tiny cone-headed nail into every button. The nail is so small you may need a pair of pliers to hold it.

3. If you prefer, you can skip the molding and glue the buttons straight onto the smooth surface. Draw a straight line with a pencil to help you place the buttons in a straight line. Now, use paint to create the effect of metal slats.

4. Prime your surface with one coat. Then use the Metallic Pewter as base coat on the surface. Don’t bother being neat—instead paint messily for better effect. Drag the brush back and forth, making sure the whole surface is covered. Let it dry and, if needed, paint another coat in the pewter shade to make sure it’s completely covered.

5. Paint the surface once using the dark gray metallic color. To create a more exciting surface with some texture, sprinkle some chalk onto the painted surface. Paint over this, blending the chalk and the color, giving you a slightly raised effect on the surface.
